Handicraft project stage III in Achocalla and Comanche

LOCATION: Municipality Achocalla
PERIOD: January 2008 – December 2009
PICTURES: -
DESCRIPTION: This third phase of the Handicraft Project is aimed at improving the chances for the (inter)national market of textile handicraft products which are produced by 9 groups of women in the municipalities of Achocalla and Comanche.

Problem:

The first phase (link) and second phase (link) of this project have resulted in an handicraft centre in Achocalla and 9 groups of qualified women in Achocalla and Comanche (who already had handicraft centers), who are able to make high-quality handicraft products and sell them commercially on a small scale.
With that, continuity of the project has not been guaranteed yet. To make more profit of it, further professionalization of products and marketing is necessary.

Solution:

An experienced designer is contracted. In cooperation with the project coordinator they will work on the following activities:
- Developing a mark name and logo.
- Developing designs for indigenous/Western handicraft products.
- Developing prototypes of exclusive designs.
- Developing the first models of the mark and present them.
- Training the women to be able to produce the new designs.
- Specific market research about the potentials on the local, regional and international market. Depending on the results, adapting the designs and the trainings.

Result:

- The women will be in the possession of new product designs, which are a combination of indigenous and Western aspects and which has been reviewed on their opportunities in a local, regional and international market.
- The woman organization can produce with a mark name and logo.
- At least twice a year there is a new production line for the women.
- The women are accompanied in setting up a distribution channel, contact with suppliers and contact with consumers in the trade market.
- The concerned participants have knowledge of the market of handicraft products, export possibilities and - conditions.
